Identification
Its red skin of the head is partially bare with a dense crest of white plumes on the nape.
Distribution
The only known wild breeding population is in a small reserve in the Qinling Mountains of southern Shaanxi, China, on the edge of the species' former range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1] and the only member of the genus Nipponia.
Habitat
The remaining wild population occurs in patches of pine forest at around 1,200m and in adjacent rice-paddies, ponds and rivers.
Behaviour
Breeding
They make their nests at the top of trees on hills usually overlooking their habitat.
Diet
They usually eat frogs, small fish, and small animals.
