Pipra aureola

Identification

Male

  • Crimson hood and upper breast
  • Mainly black elsewhere
  • Some yellow on the face and throat varies according to the subspecies
  • White iris

Female

  • Olive green plumage

Distribution

South America: found in Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • P. a. aureola:
  • P. a. aurantiicollis:
  • Brazil on River Tapaj¢s in western Par  and adjacent northern bank of River Amazon
  • P. a. flavicollis:
  • Lower Amazonian Brazil in eastern Amazonas and western Par 
  • P. a. borbae:
  • Brazil along lower and middle River Madeira in eastern Amazonas

Habitat

Swamps, waterways and mangroves.
