Identification

- Long, thin, straight bill
- Greenish-brown head and upper back with white flecks
- Chestnut-brown wings
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador Peru, Bolivia and Brazil
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 4 or 5 subspecies[1], [2]:
- X. e. buenavistae:
- Eastern slope of East Andes of Colombia in upper Orinoco drainage
- X. e. ornatus:
- X. e. insignis:
- Foothills of east-central Peru (south of Río Marañón)
- X. e. elegans:
- Brazil south of the Amazon and northern Bolivia
- X. e. juruanus: sometimes split as Spix's Woodcreeper
- South-eastern Peru to north-eastern Bolivia and western Brazil (west of Rio Madeira)
Habitat
Lowland humid forest, mostly floodplains and terra firme.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of arthropods, with the addition of some small vertebrates.
