Southeast Asia: found only in New Guinea.
Taxonomy
This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 6 subspecies.

- M. m. steini:
- Yapen Island, (New Guinea)
- M. m. sepik:
- Northern slope of mountains of central New Guinea
- M. m. germanorum:
- Northern New Guinea (Cyclops Mountains)
- M. m. huonensis:
- Northeastern New Guinea (Mountains of Huon Peninsula)
- M. m. aicora:
- Northern slope of Mountains of southeastern New Guinea
An additional subspecies margaretae is not recognised by all authorities[2].
