Identification

12–13 cm

Distribution

Endemic to western Mexico, from southern Sonora to Oaxaca.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • V. h. nitidus:
  • Lowlands of western Mexico (extreme southern Sonora)
  • V. h. hypochryseus:
  • Tropical western Mexico (Sinaloa and western Durango to western Oaxaca)
  • V. h. sordidus:
  • Tres Marías Islands (off western Mexico)

Habitat

Tropical pine-oak and thorn forest and forest edges. Riparian groves and more arid areas of brushland.

Behaviour

Diet

Little information is available. They are thought to feed in mixed species flocks.
