- Picumnus granadensis
Identification
Small size (9-10 cm)
- Black top of head with white spots, male with yellowish spots on crown
- Chestnut-brown ear-coverts sometimes with a few white streaks
- Greyish-brown upperparts often with olive tinge
- Dull white underparts
Juveniles are darker and duller than adults.
Similar species
Less olive above and much paler underparts than Olivaceous Piculet.
Distribution
Colombian endemic.
Occurs along the interior slopes of the West and Central Andes through the Cauca Valley.
An uncommon restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. g. antioquensis:
- Antioquia to upper Río San Juan, Chocó
- P. g. granadensis:
- Central Cauca Valley to upper Patía Valley
Formerly considered conspecific with Olivaceous Piculet (Picumnus olivaceus).
Habitat
Dry to humid forest and edge. Also occurs in marshes and tree groves within agricultural areas.
Behaviour
No details on diet.
Breeding season probably from January to June. No other information.
Vocalisation
Give a 3-4 second trill that is reminiscent of Yellow-faced Grassquit, but is not as forceful and slows and tapers off at the end. It is also quite similar to Green-and-black Fruiteater without the tapering off at the end of the call.
