Identification
11–13 cm (4½-5 in)
Relatively large and long-tailed manakin without much sexual dimorphism. Mainly green and yellow with greyish colors on bare parts.
- Eye ring pale
- Upperparts moss-green
- Underparts olive-yellow at breast, pale yellow at the belly
- Tail long and grey
- Legs and eye grey
Sexes similar
Similar species
Some females of other species are similar in coloration but usually have shorter tail, are smaller, or have colored legs and/or eyes. Choco Manakin differs slightly in plumage but has very distinct song.
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru east of the Andes.
Taxonomy
Formerly placed in the genus Chloropipo. The Choco Manakin was formerly included here.
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized1:
- C. h. holochlora:
- C. h. viridior:
- Foothills of south-eastern Peru (Cusco and north-western Puno)
Habitat
Lowland and foothill, moist and wet forests, and preferences includes forest borders at least sometimes. Seems to reach a maximum elevation at 1500 m asl in parts of Ecuador, lower elsewhere.
Behaviour
Diet
Not a lot is known about their diet; they are thought to be mainly eating fruits while also being insectivorous.
Vocalisation
Song includes a high-pitched, thin whistle. A second sound is a rattle that starts relatively lower pitch and has a buzzy quality, followed by a higher pitch, thinner rattle. The whole thing last typically around 1 second, plus/minus a little.
