Identification

Distribution

Asia: found in Japan, summer visitor to Sakhalin Is. and Kuril Is., reported from Korea.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • P. r. rubida:
  • Southern Kuril Islands, Shikoku and Hokkaido
  • P. r. fervida:
  • Honshu (Japan); winters to Kyushu

P. r. fervida is not recognised by all authorities[2]

Habitat

Mixed deciduous and coniferous forests. Stays near the tree line in summer, moves to mid-elevations in winter.
