Identification

6.5 cm
Male

  • Black crown
  • Dark grey head
  • White "spectacles"
  • Olive-green upperparts
  • White throat and central breast
  • Blackish tail and wings (yellow edging to the feathers)
  • Two yellow wing bars
  • Grey flanks
  • Pale yellow belly

Sexes similar but females have a duller, sootier crown

Juveniles: upperparts and crown browner; wing markings and underparts tinged buff

Distribution

Humid lowlands of Costa Rica to western Colombia and north-western Ecuador

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Forest canopy, edges and clearings, and in second growth and semi-open woodland up to an altitude of 900 m.

Behaviour

Breeding

The nest, which is suspended from a thin branch, is a pouch about 15cm long, with a round side entrance. The female builds the nest and incubates the 2 brown-blotched white eggs which hatch after 15-16 days.

Vocalisation

The call is a thin ttseep.
