The species Negros Fruit Dove is possibly extinct. |
![]() |
- Ptilinopus arcanus
Identification
16.5 cm. Only known from one female specimen.
- Dark green plumage
- Ashy grey forehead
- Yellow bar on folded wing
- Whitish throat
- Yellow undertail-coverts
Male and juvenile unknown.
Distribution
One single record from Mount Canlaon in north-central Negros in the Philippines.
A search in 1991 at the type locality has failed to find the bird. Intensive hunting and habitat destruction continues and all forest below 1000 m has been cleared. If it is indeed a valid species it is certainly critically endangered or probably extinct.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Unknown affinites and it has been suggested that the single specimen is an aberrant individual of Yellow-breasted Fruit Dove. However during the only sighting in 1953 a male was also seen and shot but the body was lost in the undergrowth. The description is based on a single female specimen.
Habitat
Evergreen forest.
The only record was at 1200 m.
Behaviour
Nothing known.
