Identification
23-26 cm.
- White forehead, face and throat, becoming grey on crown and purplish grey on nape and hindneck
- Pale vinaceous sides of neck and breast
- White belly and undertail-coverts
- Chestnut brown upperparts, some chestnut red on outer wing-coverts, uppertail-coverts and central rectrices
- Some purple iridescence on hindneck and upper mantle
- Dark greyish primaries brown fringed rusty
- Yellow eye
- Pinkish red to brownish legs and feet
- Black bill
Females are less reddish brown and their pink and grey areas are duller.
Distribution
Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
A poorly known species, obviously still fairly common in its range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered a subspecies of Gray-fronted Dove.
Habitat
Moist lowland forest in Chocó lowlands. Also in dry semi-deciduous woodland and secondary forest.
Occurs from sea-level up to 800 m.
Behaviour
Usually seen singly or in pairs.
Diet
Seen feeding on the ground. No other information.
Breeding
A male in breeding condition was taken in December. No other information.
