Alternative name: Salvadori's Flowerpecker

Dicaeum keiense

Identification

9 cm (3½ in)

  • plumage bluish-black
  • chin and chest reddish (Moluccan subspecies)
  • undertail pinkish (Moluccan subspecies)
  • belly reddish buff (Moluccan subspecies)
  • belly with black central stripe

Female

  • upperparts dark grey
  • belly light grey
  • undertail with a slight red tinge

Juvenile has an orange bill with a black tip

Variation

Subapecies keiense has male underparts suffused with pinkish than Australian Mistletoebird; red of throat/chest and undertail less saturated, more pinkish. Female similar to Australian Mistletoebird, perhaps with stronger grey streaking on flanks, undertail paler pink.

Subspecies fulgidum has thicker central belly stripe than kiense, warmer buff underparts. Female browner than kiense with warmer buff vent area.

Distribution

Found in eastern Indonesia.

Taxonomy

Pink-breasted Flowerpecker was formerly included in Mistletoebird.

Subspecies

Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:

  • D. k. keiense: Southern Wallacea (Watubela, Tayandu and Kai islands)
  • D. k. fulgidum: Tanimbar Islands (Yamdena, Larat and Lutu)

Behaviour

A Birdforum member describes the male being aggressive towards other males at trees rich in food.
