Identification
Length 43 cm.
The purple crest, dark bill, pale green chin and lack of white on the face separate this species from similar turacos.
Distribution
Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, eSwatini, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Taxonomy
Previously Musophaga porphyreolopha, but since 2000, most authorities include the Purple-crested Turaco in Tauraco.
Gallirex porphyreolophus has two subspecies:
- G. p. chlorochlamys
- South-eastern Kenya and south-western Uganda to Tanzania and northern Mozambique
- G. p. porphyreolophus
- Zimbabwe and Mozambique to north-eastern South Africa
Habitat
Forest and woodland.
Behaviour
Forages in the canopy for fruit, of which a wide variety is taken.
Vocalisation
A loud kok-kok-kok-kok-kok.
