Identification

Male
- Red, thick bill
- Glossy blue-black head, upperparts and tail
- Black throat and centre of chest
- White patch on side of chest bordered below by black band from centre of chest to side of body
- White rest of underparts

- Similar to male
- Grey hindneck, back, rump and uppertail-coverts
- Black band on underparts often less distinctive
- Lower underparts often cream-coloured or tinged creamy cinnamon

Distribution
South America: found in French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.
Uncommon in its wide range.

Feeds on berries, seeds and insects.
Forages in groups of 3 to 8 birds, associating with mixed-species flocks.
