Identification

17-18 cm (6¾-7 in) in length and weighs 34 g.

Male

  • Red, thick bill
  • Glossy blue-black head, upperparts and tail
  • Black throat and centre of chest
  • White patch on side of chest bordered below by black band from centre of chest to side of body
  • White rest of underparts

Female

  • Similar to male
  • Grey hindneck, back, rump and uppertail-coverts
  • Black band on underparts often less distinctive
  • Lower underparts often cream-coloured or tinged creamy cinnamon

Juvenile

  • Black bill
  • Black head
  • White upper back, black lower back with white scaling and mottling
  • Greyish-white rump
  • White underparts mixed with black

Distribution

South America: found in French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.
Uncommon in its wide range.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Habitat

Lowland humid forest. Usually in high canopy.
Occurs from lowlands up to ca. 900m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on berries, seeds and insects.
Forages in groups of 3 to 8 birds, associating with mixed-species flocks.

Breeding

No information on breeding.

Movements

A resident species.
