Identification
17 cm. A colourful tanager with a stout bill.
- Deep read head down to upper mantle and to central breast
- Yellowish-olive back and scapulars
- Bright yellow rump and most of uppertail-coverts
- Dark dusky olive tail with yellow edges
- Bright yellow bend of wing, black rest of wing with olive-yellow fringes
- Bright yellow underparts from chest to undertail-coverts
- Blackish bill
Females are similar to males but duller, the red of the head being more restricted. Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
From Colombia to Ecuador and northeast Peru (Huánuco).
Rare to uncommon in its range, occurs in low density.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist montanes, especially in mossy epiphyte-laden forest and forest edges.
Occurs from 1700 to 3000 m in Colombia, at 2200 to 3000 m in Ecuador and c. 1800 to 3000 m in Peru.
Behaviour
Diet
Seen foraging in pairs or small flocks of 3 to 6 birds, sometimes also in mixed-species flocks.
Often in the open and fairly conspicuous.
Breeding
A female in breeding condition recorded in September. No other information.
Movements
Apparently a resident species.
