Identification
8-9 cm (3-3½ in)
- Cinnamon rufous rump and underparts
- Male has a black spot, which may extend to become a chest band
- Bill
- Long and decurved
- Base of the mandible yellow
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- P. r. episcopus in central and east Venezuela, Guyana and adjacent Brazil
- P. r. ruber from Suriname to French Guiana, Brazil, southeast Peru and north Bolivia
- P. r. nigricinctus in extreme east Colombia to southwest Venezuela and north Peru
- P. r. longipennis in south Peru
Habitat
Understorey of pre-montane lowland forests, savanna and swamps.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of nectar and small insects, taken from a variety of plants.
