Identification
14-15 cm. A nicely patterned furnariid.
- Prominent, broad bright chestnut supercilium extending to nape and mantle
- Dark blackish-brown lores and auriculars
- Bright chestnut forehead and dark brown crown
- Chestnut back, rump and uppertail-coverts
- Dusky brown wings with chestnut edges
- Chestnut graduated tail, rectrices with stiffened shafts
- White throat and malar area, with creamy tinge on lower throat
- Streaked brown and buff underparts
- Rufescent brown undertail-coverts
Sexes similar, juveniles lack the supercilium, have a less reddish back and less distinct streaks on underparts.
Distribution
Found in teh Tepuis of Venezuela, west Guyana and extreme north Brazil.
An uncommon restricted-range species, difficult to find and possibly also overlooked.
Taxonomy
Three subspecies recognized:
- R. a. obscurodorsalis in the Tepuis of southeast Venezuela (Bolívar and Amazonas)
- R. a. duidae in the Tepuis of south Venezuela (Mount Duida)
- R. a. adusta in the Tepuis of east Venezuela, adjacent west Guyana and extreme north Brazil
HBW alive additionally recognizes a fourth subspecies, mayri in the Cerro Jaua.
Habitat
Moist montane forests and elfin forest, prefers mossy and epiphyte-laden forest.
Occurs from 1000 to 2500 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on arthropods.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, often in mixed-species flocks in the undergrowth. Creeps and hitches up trunks and branches, forages by gleaning prey from moss and epiphytes on vertical trunks, vines and branches, mainly close to the ground.

This is a resident species.
