Identification
16.5ccm. Short blue bill, grey tip, red eyes and red bare eye ring, rosy red legs, rufous crown, grey sides to head, neck and upperparts olive brown, underparts cinnamon, buff throat.
Distribution
Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Suriname.
Taxonomy
Placed in genus Laterallus by some authorities.
Subspecies
- R. v. brunnescens - E Colombia (middle Magdalena Valley)
- R. v. viridis - S Venezuela to Guianas, Amaz. Brazil, e Peru and n Bolivia
Habitat
Dry savanna, wet or flooded lowland grassland, and pastureland.
Behaviour
It builds a spherical grass nest with a side entrance in marshes and 1-3 eggs are laid.
