Distribution

Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Five subspecies are recognized[1].

  • L. p. luteiventris
  • Highlands of Costa Rica to eastern Panama (Darién)
  • L. p. santaeluciae
  • Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border) and northeastern and northern Venezuela (from western Zulia east to northwestern Anzoátegui and south to Táchira)
  • L. p. squamaecrista
  • Andes of Colombia, south through the foothills and lowlands of western Ecuador to extreme northwestern Peru (Tumbes
  • L. p. pileatus
  • Andes of eastern Ecuador and Peru (south to northern Cuzco)
  • L. p. hypochlorus
  • Andes of southeastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno)

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes.
