Identification
19.5cm. A distinctive Whistler:
- Black head
- Deep red bare patch on lower throat
- Black centre of upper-breast
- Yellowish-olive rest of underparts
- Olive upperparts
- Olive rump with yellowish tinge
- Dusky brown upperwings
- Black tail
- Black bill
Females have a grey crown, a greyish-white throat and only a small bare patch which is usually concealed. Juveniles have a yellow throat without a bare patch.
Distribution
Endemic to Sumbawa and Flores in the Lesser Sundas, Indonesia.
Common on Flores, rarer on Sumbawa.

There are 2 subspecies:
- P. n. ilsa:
- Montane forests of Sumbawa (Lesser Sundas)
- P. n. nudigula:
- Montane forests of Flores (Lesser Sundas)
Habitat
Dry and moist forests and moist montanes. At 400 - 2000m on Flores, 200 - 1730 on Sumbawa.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects and spiders.
Breeding season from May to July. No other information.
