Identification
- Orange-brown upperparts
- Olive barred yellow rump
- Olive chest and throat with white spots
- Dull yellow underparts
- Bright red crown, nape, and moustachial region
- White streak on the lower cheek
Female: similar to the male but has a dark grey crown and moustachial region
Distribution
South America: endemic to Panama.
Taxonomy
This monotypic species[1], has in the past, been considered a part of Piculus leucolaemus (White-throated Woodpecker or before a split Rufous-winged Woodpecker).
Habitat
Humid lowlands and foothills on both slopes of Panama.
