Identification
55cm. A small, black hornbill with an all-black tail.
Male
- Dark rufous head and neck, darker on crown and nape
- Pale yellow bill with red patch at base and serrated casque
- Blue bare skin around eye, dark blue throat skin
Female
- Smaller than male
- All black plumage
Juveniles similar to adults but with smaller bill and no casque
Distribution
It is endemic to the island of Sumba, Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
The population is estermated at roughly 4,000 birds, though the breeding popluation may be considerable lower.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
This species has been placed in the genus Aceros.
Habitat
Semi-evergreen forests in the lowland to altitude up to 950 metres.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruit, probably also some small animals taken. Usually seen in pairs or small groups. Little known about breeding, season probably October to November. The nest is placed in a natural cavity in a large tree.
