Location: Lowland forest near Mengatal, Sabah, Malaysia
Nominate subspecies; black-and-white morph; probable male
Alternative name: Sundan Frogmouth
- Batrachostomus cornutus
Identification
23–28 cm. Two colour morphs: black-and-white or brown-and-buff; intermediates also occur. Colours of males and females differ in both morphs.
Distribution
Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Taxonomy
Reference [2] notes that subspecies longicaudatus is poorly known and may be closer to Javan Frogmouth.
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- B. c. cornutus: Sumatra, Borneo, Bangka, Belitung and Banggi islands
- B. c. longicaudatus: Kangean Islands (north east of Java)
There is a possibly undescribed population on Mentawai [2.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, mangrove forests and moist montanes.
Behaviour
It roosts during the day and is active at night.
The diet includes beetles.
It build a small nest on branch and 1 egg is laid.
