Identification

With 14.5 - 19cm a quite large Yuhina with a long tail1:

  • Dark crest with distinctive white nuchal collar
  • White underwing coverts
  • Relatively long, shallowly forked tail
  • Underparts greyish
  • Upperparts and wings dark grey

Sexes are similar, juveniles like adults.

Distribution

Occurs mainly in Central and South China (Gansu, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan), also in NE Myanmar and N Vietnam.
Common in most parts of its range.1

Taxonomy

Regarded as monotypic by Clements2.

However, other authorities accept two subspecies1:

Habitat

Open broadleaf evergreen forest, also secondary growth and tee plantations. Found between 800m and 3600m.1

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects but takes also seeds and rhododendron nectar. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks.

Breeding

Breeding season from May to September in China, earlier more south. The nest is a cup made of dry leaves, grass and roots, plastered with cobweb or moss and placed low (0.2 - 1.5m above ground) in a bush, grass or small tree. Lays 2 - 3 eggs.
Resident species, no movements known.1
