Identification
22-24 cm (8¾-9½ in).
- Large white patch on face (submoustachial to ear-coverts), black rest of head
- Rich chestnut nape to uppertail-coverts and upperwing-coverts, some white in carpal area
- Blackish flight-feathers
- Blackish tail with white on outer feathers
- Black underparts
- Broad white bar on underwing
- Black bill with yellow lower mandible
Females are similar but have more brown on crown and underparts shot with brown.
Immatures have buff streaking on crown and nape.
Distribution
South America: found from central Bolivia north to northern Peru.
Locally fairly common in suitable habitat. Probably under-recorded due to unobtrusive behaviour.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist montanes and cloudforest, also forest borders.
Occurs at 900 to 3350 m, mostly at 1500 to 2800 m.
Behaviour
A secretive species.
Diet
Feeds on berries and other fruits. Takes also insects and seeds.
Forages in trees, sometimes in mixed flocks.
Breeding
Fledglings have been seen in October and November. No other information.
Movements
A sedentary species.
