Identification
A very small Swiftlet (10cm), looks very similar to Glossy Swiftlet.
- Square tail
- Plumage green-glossed with no rectrix spots
- No feather tuft on hind toe (only visible in hand)
- Not capable of echolocation
Distribution
South-east Asia. Found on Java and locally on Sumatra.
Common and not globally threatened.
Taxonomy
Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Glossy Swiftlet. The subspecies natalis of Glossy Swiftlet has been placed in this species.
Subspecies[1]
Three subspecies recognized:
- C.l. linchi on Java, Madura, Bawean and Nusa Penida Islands.
- C.l. dedii on Bali and Lombok
- C.l. ripleyi on Bukit Barisan on Sumatra
Bornean Swiftlet was formerly included in this species.
Habitat
On Java from sea-level to mountains over forest and open country. On Sumatra restricted to high altitude.
Behaviour
Forages in crowns of fruit trees, especially fruiting figs. A gregarious species.
Makes a bracket-shaped nest out of thin vegetable pieces. Lays two eggs.
Resident, no movements known.
