Identification
White sides to body and back, white neck, chestnut breast band and rump, dark green neck and head, some black markings, red bill. Female duller. Breeding male has swollen red bill knob.
Distribution
Western Europe.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Estuaries, lakes, rivers and salt marshes.
Behaviour
Breeding
They nest in burrows, holes, caves and cliffs. The nest is lined with down and 8-12 white eggs are laid. Both sexes incubate and care for the young.
Diet
The diet includes invertebrates.
