Northiella narethae

Identification

  • Blue forehead
  • Buff flecks on breast
  • Olive upperparts
  • Yellow belly with red undertail-coverts
  • Red outher lesser wing-coverts

Sexes similar, females are duller than males and with blue flight feathers.

Distribution

South-eastern Western Australia (Nullarbor Plain) to south-western South Australia

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Greater Bluebonnet.

Habitat

Open woodland, not always near water.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects and larvae, also grass, shrub and tree seeds, herbaceous plants, nuts, berries, fruit and vegetable matter.

Breeding

They nest in hollow limbs or trunks. The clutch consists of 4-7 white eggs.
