Identification
Black and white head, red forecrown, red chin and throat, female has a white throat, yellow belly, narrow red band on the nape.
Distribution
Western United States, from British Columbia east to Montana and Wyoming south to northern Mexico and western Texas. Unccommon in coastal California.
Taxonomy
Habitat
Deciduous or mixed forests.
Behaviour
It drills holes in trees and eats the sap as well as insects attracted to it. The diet includes insects caught in flight, seeds and berries.
They nest in a tree cavity.
