Identification
25 cms (9¾ in).
- White forehead
- Broad black breast band
- Black upperparts
- White collar, throat and belly
- Variable dark barring on flanks
- Black bill and feet
Sexes similar
Similar species
Guianan Puffbird has a much smaller white area at the front of the head, narrower white hindcollar, much more extensive black barring on the flanks, noticeably smaller bill, and differ in voice from other populations.
Distribution
Central and South America:
Central America: southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia to southern Brazil
Taxonomy
Guianan Puffbird has been regarded as conspecific in the past.
Subspecies
Three subspecies accepted:
- N. h. hyperrhynchus from south Mexico to northwest South America
- N. h. cryptoleucus in El Salvador and northwest Nicaragua
- N. h. paraensis in the lower Amazon (Brazil)
Subspecies cryptoleucus is not recognized by all authorities, it is sometimes instead included within hyperrhynchus.
Habitat
Forest borders and secondary growth.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists of large insects and small vertebrates, also some vegetable matter may be eaten.
Breeding
Both sexes excavate cavity nests in arboreal termitaries; holes in the ground or in trees are also reported.
