Yes this is interesting - looking forward to seeing more photos. Thanks to all for the interesting discussion from which we might all learn. I agree, Valéry - there is a big difference between photos and real birds. It's a little like the way that birds in the hand lose all their jizz. All the...

Lots of people telling us it's a hobby. Great, I'm prepared to be wrong and to learn from this but I need you to say why. Present your evidence. Ken

crested tern in Jeddah - red sea

Not the same bird, no. But I do believe they are different examples of the same species. The first is a very sleek breeding plumaged bird, the second is in heavy moult, has moulted its crown feathers and is growing new primaries. However, I still believe them to be the same species. Ken

crested tern in Jeddah - red sea

The orange tones to the bill really rule out Greater-Crested tern and the breeding plumaged bird has the black cap connecting with the bill (white gap left in greater-crested). Also, the dark outer primaries of the second bird are more in keeping with Lesser-Crested. All in all I'd say both...

    Africa/Kenya/ Raptor ID please

Tawny Eagle. Main confusion species is Steppe Eagle but what I can make of the gape line and colour/patterning indicate Tawny. It is also the most likely in terms of abundance (especially if the photo was taken recently as Steppe is mainly a winter visitor to Africa from the north). Hope this...

Yep - checked the books and I reckon Red-footed falcon without a doubt (I'm sure I'll regret those last three words when Dick Forsman comes on and wipes the floor with me!). Points for r-ff are: * Large, obvious white cheek into collar appearing to separate dark cap * Finer streaking more...

Glad you wrote that. I kept quiet on the Tacumshin peg/hobby thread as my instant reaction was peregrine but at first everyone else said hobby. I was starting to think I needed to hang up my bins. For this bird, I need to check my fieldguides (MacMillan Guide is good for these) but instant gut...

    Outspan d-c sunbird species

Thanks The more research I do, the more it looks like both species occur at the site. Have a good trip! Ken

    Chew Valley Lake Egrets

No expert, but... First thoughts were of very recently fledged little egret but then a further look suggests to me hybrid little-cattle. The hybrid theory always seems somewhat unsatisfactory to me but it has general little egret slimness and elegance - not stocky like a cattle. However, the...

    Outspan d-c sunbird species

Thanks Mike D Well, at about 1800m this is quite high... but I guess I'll never know. 'Experts can tell them apart' - so that rules me out. I'm going to stick with Eastern as that is what I identified it as at the time. I'm hoping a friend might be able to come up with a photo when he sorts...

Kenya, Outspan Hotel - Double-collared Sunbird

Been doing a little more research... I've been reading the Helm guide to Sunbirds by Cheke, Mann and Allen. It hasn't really helped me come to a decision, but boy, aren't some of them similar? (inc. 'my' eastern/northern double-collared pair.) Beats me how anyone differentiated these species in...

    Outspan d-c sunbird species

Thanks Shailesh Well... how long's a piece of string? I thought it was on the narrow side... but I had nothing to compare it with. Probably best to forget it and move on, I suppose.

    Outspan d-c sunbird species

In the Bird ID Q&A Forum, I have posted an query re the species of double-collared sunbird to be found at the Outspan Hotel, Nyeri (Aberdares). Thought watchers of this forum might be able to help so there is a link to the thread below: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=149812 Many...

Kenya, Outspan Hotel - Double-collared Sunbird

Don't have a photo, I'm afraid. Does anyone know which species is most likely - northern or eastern d-c sunbird at Outspan? Thought I sorted it at the site but see that different trip reports report either species - now having doubts. Perhaps both occur (please no!). Any thoughts welcome...

Wild Great Bustard chicks hatch (BBC News)

I'm overjoyed. I don't understand why other species (cranes, beavers, cirl buntings) that are generally less threatened globally, receive so much support but that this project hasn't. Well done to all those concerned. I would imagine that the likelihood of these particular chicks surviving is...

    ID please, Gower, Wales

I agree that it really doesn't make you think shag (missus!) straight away. However, with so many others saying so I forced another look and agree. Just odd lighting and posture but it does appear to have a long tail and the feet do appear to be webbed 'on the inside' if you know what I mean...

    ID please, Gower, Wales

Sorry to doubt you. In that case I have little idea. It does suggest whistling-duck sp (Dendrocygna) to me but I don't think any of those have yellow legs. Ken :h?:

    New programme 'Pacific' 10/5/09 BBC2 8.30-9.30pm

I thought this got off to a fantastic start. The photography was stunning - it just gets better and better. Really enjoyed the stuff about the people, too. (Always used to be disappointed as a kid when 'The World Around Us' was about lost tribes instead of wildlife!). Most annoying was the...

    Neotropic or double Crested?

Thanks to all for the replies - certainly educational for me although the ID does not appear to have taxed anyone else! I think I was just under a misconception of the true nature and appearance of neotropic. I shall pay more attention to cormorants next time I'm in the Neotropics! Location in...

    Neotropic or double Crested?

Thanks Jan and Niels. I've only seen neotropic once and didn't realise how chunky-headed they could appear. I just had this mental image of slim, small-headed things. WRONG! Either of you like to say what clinches it for the photo I posted? Is it gular shape? Thanks for the help so far. Ken

    Neotropic or double Crested?

I know what you mean - looks like a swimming pool. Noticed, after starting this thread, the sticky about including location in thread title. Totally agree. Apologies to those wound up by this. Would change it now but don't know how. Ken

    Neotropic or double Crested?

Just been sent this pic from a friend travelling somewhere in the Bahamas, not sure which island. Instant thought: I was sure it was Double Crested Cormorant on jizz if nothing else. Have now looked in Nelson, Pelicans, Cormorants and their Relatives and the gular shape seems to match neotropic...
