Odd looking goose at Inverleith Park, Edinburgh

I'd be grateful if someone could clear up for me what this is. Thought at first a Canada goose but am confused by the pale eye ring, pink/yellow beak, the cheeks grey not white, the brown rather than black neck (and without ring delineating the breast). Thank you!

Birds of the World - Cornell subscription service

Has anyone used this, and if so, would you say the subscription price is worth it for someone UK - based? I know it’s intended to look world wide but I’m wondering - for instance - whether it is biased more toward the Nearctic and Neotropical. And how would you rate it for the depth of...

ID. Tyninghame, East Lothian UK yesterday

Any help in identifying these birds would be appreciated. Seen at the Tyninghame Estuary, East Lothian, Scotland, yesterday as the tide was coming in. Any help in pointing out the features that help towards your ID would be appreciated so I can learn for the future

    Birding "ethics"

Possibly ethics is not the word, but what I'm after as a newbie birder, is online resources describing how to behave around birds (and why) so as not to disturb them too much. I know that much of it will just be common sense, but I'm keen to learn the right approach Can anyone point me in the...

    Parent/juvenile ID, Edinburgh UK

I saw this pair in a tree in a park in Edinburgh, and couldn't identify them. They were much smaller than sparrows, and constantly moving (so, difficult to photograph!). Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance James

ID 4 juveniles, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh

Thanks Tom, it's good that I'm not alone in finding juveniles tricky to ID. I am sure you're right about the chiffchaffiness, there were plenty of chiffchaffs around. Perhaps I should have waited for a parent to come with food but I didn't want to disturb too much
  10. Juvenile Long-eared Owl

    Juvenile Long-eared Owl

Spotted this morning after hearing it's "squeaky gate" call

    Juvenile bird / Edinburgh, UK

I'm new to this - forgive me if this one is obvious: I saw this bird on the bank of the Water of Leith today, hopping about looking for insects. It was the size of a large sparrow I'd say.

    Tawny Owl

Seen yesterday (2 June 2020) by the Water of Leith near Dean Village. The highlight of my lockdown

    Buzzed by a tawny owl

Hi Delia, many thanks for the warm welcome! Thanks too for pointing me to the Scotland forum. I'm fairly new to birding, still finding my way, and obviously new to the forum so that's really helpful. James

    Buzzed by a tawny owl

After my recent encounter I can imagine how that may have had a powerful effect on you. And the cat.. Funny in retrospect though!

    Buzzed by a tawny owl

This morning I was on a footpath above the Water of Leith in Edinburgh, photographing a wren, when I looked up and saw an owl flying straight at me, head-height, completely silent. As it got to about 10 feet away I tried to take evasive action, tripped and fell over 😂. As I did so it banked...
