    Colorful visitor in Mass, USA

The wren looks in rough shape. It looks like it is missing most of it's tale. As others have said you have a male American Redstart with those orange/ red highlights with black. The female looks very much the same except it has yellow highlighting gray. They summer in large portions of the U.S...

I use to live in Colorado and would see these once in a while traveling south of our home. I miss them. Not that Florida doesn't have great birds too but Scaled Quail are just funny birds.

I wish I had a macro lense! What I have/had for cameras over the years have all been glorified point and shots.

I cannot tell what country you are in from your profile info. but if you are in the U.S. I recommend Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America. No Field Guide can be comprehensive on the subject of insects as that guide would be huge. This guide does however give a good representation of...

I like them too. Birding led to butterflies and butterflies led to other bugs. I don't go out looking for bugs but while out birding I find bugs. I have seen some pretty cool ones and I have a butterfly life list of 129.

    Northern Cardinal

Getting late into the summer last year this male cardinal was attacking his reflection both on this visit to the park and on a prior visit. I think it didn't have a mate for the season and was desperate to run off any competition.

Why do Blue Jays mimic hawks?

I have heard it is their attempt to scare away the competition for food. Like you I have also heard Blue Jays mimic Red-shoulders but also Cooper's Hawks and Red-tailed Hawks. Blue Jays eat much the same food as other small birds and if they can keep the competition away by sounding like a...
