    Coolpix P6000 - self-timer and remote control?

Certainly does help, thanks Michael. A little annoying that it won't remember the timer delay but at least the r/c setting is good news. I have tried my Canon remote but that does not work, perhaps I have a remote for some thing else. I see the Nikon r/c costs about £10 but by the time I...

    Coolpix P6000 - self-timer and remote control?

I bought a Coolpix P6000 recently and I am irritated that the two second self-timer delay cannot be assigned to U1 or U2. Even more irritating is that after setting and taking a self-timer shot the P6000 resets the self-timer to off! It seems that the self-timer needs to be selected before...

    Lichen - I think

Hello all, I have asked for help with this elsewhere but without success. I presume this is a lichen? 1.5cm across, flat with upturned margins like a very small lilly pad, growing on felled Willow in Notts. Thanks Richard

    Unknown Polypore(?)

I recocognise that one! Yes, IMO, it is a Winter Polypore - it looks just like ones I have seen on deciduous wood. Don't know about growing on pine though. Are there any confusion species? Richard

    Congo Red

Just the job. Will have a delve around the web site later to see if anything else of interest. Thanks Gerry.

    Congo Red

One gram Congo Red powder that I had ordered arrived today but with no instructions and Brunel microscopes cannot help. I presume it will dissolve in distilled water as I don't remember it having an alcohol smell at school. Any idea how much water to add? Once made up how long will it last...

    Fungi ID Help Please

Hi Gerry Sorry but I have no idea - I have not seen this species but I remembered your images when I was looking through Phillips to try to id something that I have found. Richard

    Fungi ID Help Please

How about Psathyrella piluliformis? I think I can see a bit of veil remaining on the edge of the second from right. Richard R

    Spore microscopy

Hi Pete, Why didn't I think of that? I hadn't thought to try my digiscoping camera (I used it in the past but have moved on to a SLR camera). Using my Nikon Coolpix with microscope eyepiece in-situ works adequately and is quicker and easier than removing the m'scope eyepiece and focusing my...

    LBJ help please

Thank you Alan, your feedback is much appreciated. I think this is beginning to make some sense :) Happy New Year to you and all. Richard R.

    LBJ help please

Thanks Alan, I have teased out one of the gills from my Nuacora sp. and taken a couple of pics of the gill with my rather Heath Robinson set up. Could you/anyone tell me what I am looking at please? Both were taken at the same magnification and I am confused as to why the structure in A...

    LBJ help please

I took the attached a few days ago and can only come up with a tentative ID of Naucoria sp. Approx 20 individuals growing on twigs probably Willow or Alder. Cap: chestnut brown centre with cinnamon tinting toward margin and pale edge. Remnants of partial veil obvious but no ring apparent. D is...

Thanks and thank you for ALL your help Alan. Richard R

    Cantharellus sp. and two unknown

Hi Leif, Probably a stupid question but how do I get spores from a jelly fungus - is it enough to place the fungus on a slide and wait? Richard R.

    TBJ - tall brown job

Additionally I presume the pink edge to the gills that you would expect to see on P. gracillis is more apparent than the light coloured edge seen on the attached? Thanks again Richard R

    TBJ - tall brown job

Thanks Alan, I had discounted Psathyrella on the grounds that these were growing on sub-surface branches. Is guess that isn't relevant here? Everything else fits. I have looked at some pictures of Psathyrella gracilis/corrugis on Google and some have a markedly fluffy stem base. Is the...

    Spore microscopy

Thanks Alan, I am still struggling to view basidia. I realise the basidia are on the sides of the gill so will not be seen easily when the gill sliver is laid flat in a slide. I have tried to get the sliver end on ie in cross section - is that right? I have perhaps seen some basidia after...

    TBJ - tall brown job

I have gone through all the dark-brown/ purple /black-spored genera (my list included Gomphidius, Hypholoma, Lacrymaria, Psathyrella, Agaricus, Psilocybe, Stropharia, Panaeolus + Coprinus). I found something that didn't fit for all of them! I wondered about cross-referencing with sp. that...

    Fung ID Help Please

That is all I can come up with Gerry. I would have thought the small cap in relation to the tall stem, the brown fairly widely spaced gills and the silveryness of the stem would have made at least the genus quite easy. Not so. I tried to 'key it out' last night but spore colour is crucial for...

    TBJ - tall brown job

Is this a Panaeolus sp. - does A show mottled gills or just smudging where I have disturbed the black spores? Growing on hidden branchs in mainly Willow habitat (so maybe not Panaeolus?) 5 solitary individuals of varying cap size and height Cap conical with flattened apex, darkish brown with...

    Spore microscopy

I am feeling quite pleased with myself! I am trying to id a black-spored fungus without success - more about that in a day or two if/when I give up!! I was looking at it's spores through my aged microscope and noted that they are the largest I have seen so far. Unfortunately, I have no way...

    More fungi help please.

My thanks to both of you. Alan, you are right in that the fungi did not have a blue tint. I have found another one this afternoon and note that they do not seem to be on the Notts list. I will ask our recorder how scarce they are in Notts. Three more unknowns for me today including my first...

    More fungi help please.

Please could I have some help with the attached. Found these this week in Notts, growing on moss covered soil in an area with Hawthorne, Oak and Alder. There were several separate individuals and I saw two others a few hundred metres away. Cap: hemispherical with blunt umbro, smooth, glossy...

    Microscopy

Thanks Alan, Have just tried that with the gill of something I have yet to id but the gill still seems too thick to give a clear outline - or maybe I don't know what I am looking at! I know were some Mycena (inclinata I think) are still surviving so I will collect one tomorrow and have a go...

    Fungi ID Help Please

I do the same - they complement each other. I guess the Phillips is a bit more up to date with taxonomy but the colour guide, diagrams of different shapes of caps, stems and pores plus the key are all useful, at least for a beginner like me. Richard R
