    Bird Song Quiz

http://www.garden-birds.co.uk/quiz/quiz.htm The above link is the only British bird song test I could find online. It's quite easy, especially as it's multiple choice. You can choose to do photo ID, songs or songs and calls. Anyone know of anything similar? I get rusty on vocalisations during...

    Impacts of alien birds

These discussions tend to go round in circles, so don't want to get too embroiled. However, just so that he knows he's not a lone voice in the wilderness I'd like to say that I agree with most of what John O'Sullivan says. Humans think we're so important and can control everything. Life will...

    Bonfire - environmental impact

Agreed. Bet yours aren't as big as the Belfast ones tho. Search google images for Belfast bonfire if you're interested! (NB. Maybe not for the faint-hearted)

    Birds Britannia 3 Nov BBC4 9pm

Don't recall the comments in question but I hate blanket statements like this that there is no evidence for/proof of. How do the programme makers know why any individual feeds birds?!

    BBC Twitching Documentary

Ach she's going birdwatching for heavens sake!!! Again, like the adult twitchers themselves, she could be doing far worse. Ever heard of Desmond Nethersole-Thompson? Didn't he bring his whole family (including young kids) to the top of the cairngorms for most of the year to hunt for greenshank...

    Birds Britannia 3 Nov BBC4 9pm

Good first programme, looking forward to the next few now. Didn't learn much new info but liked the comments near the end about house sparrows sharing our urban "habitat" and the (still unconfirmed) causes of their decline potentially affecting us further down the line. Illustrates the links...

    All things Osprey

Thanks John, good to know. Just heard some (more) talk today about osprey nesting posts possibly being erected at Lough Neagh so hopefully some action will eventually be taken!

    BBC Twitching Documentary

Just watched on iPlayer. Not my type of birding at all but I found it an entertaining programme. Extreme twitchers seem a bit mad but fair play to them, they could be doing worse. How on earth do so many of them end up married though? Women must be madder than I thought, I'll bear that in mind!

    All things Osprey

Yep Lough Beg, it's actually quite a big lake, just small in comparison to Lough Neagh! It sometimes has two or three ospreys hanging around in the summer. There's some talk of putting up nesting platforms around the Lough Neagh area but not much action. Wildfowling might anyway mean there's...

    Sparrowhawk or Peregrine....

Rambo sounds like one crazy buzzard! Would never have thought a buzzard would have been capable of taking a goose in flight. Likewise with the sprawks, any book I've read states maximum prey size for males to be a thrush. Black grouse is noted in BWP as largest prey for a female. If I were you...

    County Birds

For Ulster I would go for Black Guillemot. They're common along the east coast and perhaps more tame than anywhere else in the British Isles. Also as Ulster is/was known as "the black north" a mostly black bird is suitable! Co. Armagh: bullfinch, they're common here and like the orchards...

    Sparrowhawk or Peregrine....

Drake mallard, let alone greylag, seems large prey for a buzzard! Were these birds taken in flight? Also what ducks have you seen sparrowhawks take? Presumably only teal? Think in terms of diet the geographic and individual preferences of different raptor species must vary widely.

    Estimating Flock Sizes in Flight

Some days I try to count almost eveything I see, other days I can't be bothered! I remember seeing that game on here before. I seem to underestimate most of the time and after a few games have went from 3% to over 70% failure ratings. Have to keep practising!

    Estimating Flock Sizes in Flight

I'm not great at estimating the size of large moving flocks. I know all about the count a section then multiply up tactic but think I am pretty poor at it. For any very large flocks I usually put 1000+ and leave it at that. However I have a question from watching a mixed jackdaw/rook roost. If...

    All things Osprey

Thanks and interesting website. Maybe with climate change they'll overwinter in the near future. I'm still hoping for a few breeding pairs in NI, they're common enough on migration.

    Northern Ireland Local Patch

osprey still at oxford island on 2nd Oct. Anybody know how long it's likely to hang around for? It didn't seem in any hurry to head south. What's the latest NI date and/or have any ever overwintered?

    All things Osprey

Osprey was at Oxford Island, north Armagh there on Sat 2nd Oct. It (or a number of birds) have been seen sporadically for the past few months. Thought it was quite a late record but seemingly not too unusual. Aside from the late December record, are there any records of ospreys actually...

    Anyone seen this before?

I saw this for the first time when I was over in England (Shropshire/Staffordshire) earlier this year. Noted at the time... "26/2/10 Three chaffinches on feeder (two males, one female) had deformed “cauliflower” feet. They appeared to have paler, scruffier plumage than healthy birds. One male...

    Lost Land of the Tiger-Tues 21/9/2020 21.00-22.00pm BBC1 Part 1/3

Thought episodes one and three were great, highly enjoyed them. Two not so good. That guy George (the older man with the beard?) ... obviously very clever and knowledgable but did he have to keep crying and also falling down slopes etc. in a comedy fashion? Suppose just doing for the cameras...
