    nightjar in cumbria

I replied on your other thread. To reiterate, In the last full census (2001) there were only 2-6 pairs recorded so a very good find! It'd be great if you could submit your record to both The Biological Records Centre http://www.lakelandwildlife.co.uk/ and the relevant Cumbria Bird Club local...

Hello, I've just heard a nightjar!

You can also submit your sighting here http://www.lakelandwildlife.co.uk/ This site may even say whether it has been recorded in the Parish where you saw it. In the last full census (2001) there were only 2-6 pairs recorded so a very good find!

    Birds in Cumbria

There's a few images here...http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/kites-grizedale2011.html should give a rough idea. I've seen kites around Flookburgh but they've always had the orange tags. Would be an interesting development if there is a red tagged bird about!

That's interesting red wing tags would indicate a Scottish bird. Grizedale released birds have orange tags.

    Problem with 823

The guy I spoke to was a Kowa rep. He said the scope would have to be sent to Kowa Japan for the repairs. :)

    Problem with 823

No trouble! Let us know what they quote you for the service, as I'm still tempted to get it done. Wish I'd written down the price now. Cheers.

    Problem with 823

I've got exactly the same problem. I contacted Kowa and apparently you can have your scope serviced which includes a "re-spray". I can't remember exactly how much it costs but think it was in the region of £100-200.

    South Walney Nature Reserve

Thanks for the reply! Caught up with the brent geese straight away. They were hanging around on the shoreline just before the caravan park. Finally saw the long-tailed duck, it was out of the water (which surprised me) next to the oyster pools. Female scaup was still there as well. Good...

    South Walney Nature Reserve

Hi, Can't believe there's not already a thread dedicated to Walney! Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows the best areas for seeing the twite and the brent geese? I'm planning a trip out there tomorrow and hoping the long-tailed duck is still hanging around too. Missed it last time I was...

field guide and other bird books for Xmas

Can't go wrong with the Collins. If you've got a smart phone I'd seriously consider one of the bird ID apps to!

    Birding in and around grassmere/Ambleside

The woods around High Close YHA (Low Wood, Red Bank Wood etc) are also worth a look around. In the summer they're excellent for singing wood warbler, redstart and pied flycatcher as well as other more common woodland species. If you fancy a higher level walk, a wander up to Stickle Tarn in the...

If you're on Twitter check out @hawfinchesuk and @NTSizerghCastle too as they both regularly report sightings. Good luck! :)

    Sizergh Hawfinches

Yep, hawfinches are being sighted fairly regularly now. Best time is first thing before it gets too busy (around the car park). :)

    Any good data recording apps?

Good that you've emailed them! The more people that give them feedback the better, I really think this app is maybe just a few updates away from being really good. I'd also like to be able to do more with the data but I've a feeling this will always be limited to tempt people into buying the pc...

    Leica BN and BA

Brilliant, thanks for this! I've sent about 5 emails to Leica over the last 7 - 10 days and still hadn't got the info I was after. It really is much appreciated! :)

    Leica BN and BA

Just wondering if anyone has got the specs for the Leica 8x32 BAs? I was wanting to know close focus distance, field of view etc. as I'm thinking of upgrading from the BAs but wanted to know the specs on paper before trying some other bins out in the field. I've tried contacting Leica but...

    Any good data recording apps?

I'd suggest you get in touch with the people at bird journal. I recently downloaded the app and sent an email of what I'd like to see changed. They got back in touch and said that it'd be fed back at the next general meeting. What i'd like to see are: An option to create a list without a date...

    Mandarin ducks in Cumbria

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has seen any mandarins this year on Windermere? I've had a look at a few old bird reports and it seems Fell Foot is a good site. Has anybody got any other suggestions on where is a good viewing point for them? Thanks! :)

New Nat'l Geo Field Guide coming out

I'd kind of thought the same, that another reprint can't be far off. Perhaps some news will come from the States sometime soon. :)

New Nat'l Geo Field Guide coming out

Thanks for the detailed responses! From what I've seen I really like the illustrations in Sibley and this is perhaps the most important thing for me. I have an early edition of the Nat Geo which I picked up cheap about 10 years ago, and the quality of field guides has improved a lot in this...
