    West Midlands/Warwickshire local patches.

Brandon was pretty good today Had a summer plumaged Dunlin on East Marsh, plus up to 4 Hobbies at one point, all visible at the same time, with Buzzards, a Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk all in the sky as well. The highlight though was a hepatic morph female Cuckoo (a gingery version of a Cuckoo...

There's a pair nesting on the reserve (can't say where, for obvious reasons...), so chances are it was around there, as (as far as I know) there are no others in residence on the reserve. Sam

Had the Wood Warbler at Brandon at 5:45pm today, after waiting 90 mins without so much as a trill! Waited for a better view until I had to leg it to reach the car park in time for Dad to pick me up. The best of the rest was finally hearing the Gropper, seeing a Sedge and hearing a few more...

I've spent more than 2 hours waiting for sight or sound of the Grasshopper Warbler on two consecutive weekends - still haven't even heard anything! All I got for my troubles yesterday was a Sedge Warb. The best of the mix on the pools was a female Ruddy Duck, one Dunlin and a Little Ringed Plover

    Smack in the face

Never been hit, but I've had a total of three near-misses with Sparrowhawks! A few weeks ago, walking back home from town, one (chasing a Pied Wagtail) avoided my by barely an inch, and I actually ducked to miss it. Even felt the wind from its wings! I also know someone who kicked out in...

What time did you get for the run? Out of interest, as I would love to do something like that in my PE lessons (at my school we never do cross-country or anything like that - we aren't even allowed to do full-contact rugby!)

I went back to school on Wednesday as well - hate that feeling when you get up on the first day back! Only had one day of birding (and then only a couple of hours), so haven't bothered sorting out a list for 2007 yet Nice one on the Firecrest, Firecrest Sam

Yeah, Devon is of course crap for gulls (note intense sarcasm) You're a coastal county! It can't be too bad for gulls, unlike us inland people

Jyothi, mate - Goldeneye, a lifer!? You got the Murrelet, Least Sand and a few other good birds before Goldeneye. They can't be that hard to find in Devon. Even in the deep dark depths of the horrible Warks I can see a couple of dozen in an hour or so at a resorvoir no problem. But still...

Hope you all had a great Christmas! I personally got very little bird-related, bar a couple of books, but loved both. Non-bird-related stuff included a new bike (about time!), a lava lamp, the series of Alex Rider books in one volume (by Anthony Horrowitz) and a few other bits and bobs. Oh...

Thanks for that, hadn't realised. Empty again now. And I would be more than happy to relay my sightings across to you guys in America, but to be honest, I've barely seen anything of interest lately! Haven't had much time at all... Oh, the goldfinches have returned to the feeders in the back...

Stop trying to offload our American friends! If it wasn't for them, this thread would probably disappear before too long! btw, out of interest, how is birding viewed across the Atlantic? Is it classed as the same anorak-type hobby as train-spotting as it is over here?
