looking for group/ some one to go birding with

A good starting point would be your local RSPB group. Mine organises monthly coach trips which are very affordable. As well as the help you may get from other members at the venue, there are lots of tips and interesting snippets to pick up on the journey itself. No problems with car parking at...

    Careful where you buy

I mentioned this company on the Forum a couple of months back. I too had purchased a 7D from them. They assured me that there was no customs duty or VAT to be paid. When I received the parcel from the couriers, Simply Electronics had described the contents as camera batteries, so subsequently...

    Help with 7d please

Hmm, I have used a 100-400 on a 40d in the past, but haven't used it on my 7d yet. Don't suppose it's something linked to I.S. hunting around at the long end of the lens? Where abouts are you? It might be worth someone with the same kit swapping the lens over to see if it moves, or stays with...

    Help with 7d please

Not teaching granny to suck eggs, but has the 7d gone to sleep? The standard settings turn it off after a few minutes of inactivity. You can save a different standby setting in the user memories. If this isn't the problem, then try the camera in shutter priority mode or manual focus and see what...

    Canon 7D Offers

I ordered a 7d from Simply Electronics a few months back, over the phone. I asked them about duty and VAT and was told that the cost was inclusive of duty etc. Their delivery time frames were wildly optimistic, I had to make repeated phone calls to get them to actually dispatch the camera. When...

    Countryfile-15/04/2012-Sunday 19.00pm-20.00pm BBC1***Twite***

I was mixing the sound for this TV programme last week, but until then was unaware that Twite were only breeding in the Pennines. It probably explains why I haven't seen one for many years, as I live in the midlands.

SHOTGUN MIC vs PARABOLIC OPTION for distant sounds

If you don't wish to record these creatures but rather locate them at night, might I ask what for???

    Unpleasant Birder

What a shame that all those fieldcraft skills are wasted on egg collecting, I'm sure if his interest had been photography or conservation he would have been quite differently perceived. Andy

    Unpleasant Birder

I guess you have to appreciate that birding to some folk is a competitive business, so the only reason they approach others is to solicit information to save them time and effort. I often record sound at birding sites, so tend to be Mr antisocial in not wanting to be near other birders. They...

    Portable hard drive failure

I've been making a lot of beeping noises as well... just back from 12 days in Wester Ross, never seen so much wind and rain. No seriously, a lot of the big suppliers of external drives recommend the more expensive units such as Lacie and G-Tech, although so far (touch wood) I've not had any...

Lens rotational movement and what teleconverter

I too use the same combo. As a convert from manual focus Canon FD lenses, I use the 1.4X TC with the lens, but in manual. Oddly, of the lenses I use with the 40D, the 100-400L is the only one that exhibits the slight wobble that you describe. Im my case the body was bought new, the lens used.

Perhaps you ought to re-title this as Photographing Shore Birds. I saw your title on my RSS feed and was quite shocked.

Will the earthquake in Japan make Binocular supplies dwindle?

I have to agree; the whole economy and tens of thousands of lives are priority, rather than someone getting their fix of binos.

Obvious answers are Loch Ken (not far from the kite feeding station), Caerlaverock WWT reserve and Mereshead RSPB. Doach Wood near Castle Douglas if you're into red squirrels. Andy

    M80 viewer manual

Hello, it's been a while since I posted on the forum, but hope that someone can help me out. I recently bought a Canon M80 Storage Viewer, but it came without the operating manual CD. I have searched the Canon sites without success for a pdf manual. I was wondering if anyone has a CD and could...

    Recording Equipment Package Advice

The use of playback to attract birds (often called calldown) must be used with care and consideration. In some cimcumstances, particularly in the breeding season, the use of calldown can frighten birds out of their own territories. Also, the sounds that you record may well be alarm calls, not...

Parabolic reflector and Sennheiser MKH20 – do they work together?

One of the chaps in the Society has a Telinga dish and a couple of AT Cardioid condensers. He has baffled these with a piece of plastic seperating the 2 mics, which sit parallel to one another pointing into the dish. I don't know how successful this would be with omnis. The old school ideas...

Parabolic reflector and Sennheiser MKH20 – do they work together?

Hi Mike, a few notes about Sennheiser mics in dishes ! I use an MKH 40/30 MS pair in a 20" reflector quite regularly. As you may be aware, these mics are RF polarized and much less likely to be affected by damp and humidity. The omni 20 has a very extended bottom end, which in honesty you...

    Fostex FR2-LE

One thing to watch on this machine is the card formatting system. You have to make the decision whether you wish to record at 44.1, 48, 16 or 24 bit, mono or stereo. You can't mix modes on the same card. (Eg 48/24 birds and mono mp3 bats !) Good recording time if you use a 7.2V race car battery...

CF cards/ write speed for Marantz PMD660

Hi Mark, I guess there isn't any reason not to use the faster Lexar cards, except for cost. They always seemed to be more expensive than the Sandisk or Kingston cards of the same speed. As I mentioned, the Ultra 2's are about a quarter of the price they were 18 months ago, so you would think...

CF cards/ write speed for Marantz PMD660

Hello Mark, I think I can help you with some of your questions, although I'm sure there are other forum members with the Marantz recorder that will help more. Regarding formatting, most of the machines have the capability to format in FAT 32, you shouldn't need to use a card reader. Usually the...

    Painted Ladies on their way.

Indeed, I have never seen so many painted ladies as we have had this July. Photographing them requires standing on a step-ladder (much to the amusement of the neighbours) as my buddleia bush is so tall !! Andy West Midlands QUOTE=White*Kite]There's loads of Buddleia bushes on my patch, and...
