Unidentified chick rescued from cat. Sámara, Costa Rica

This little chick was rescued from a cat in the woods. It is safe with a neighbor, but she needs to identify it, and learn what to feed it, as the parents have not appeared to collect it. The local forum has determined that it is a baby Chachalaca. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sámara, Guanacaste Costa Rica, pacific beach

Please help to identify this bird, found by tourists, injured on the beach. Only photo I have; note tiny slice of watermelon in what seems to be an egg carrier for scale. Thanks. LazDivaz

    Which flycatcher? Sámara, Costa Rica

Having trouble identifying this flycatcher spotted in the early morning in coastal woods. Would not lower his head for me, and was quite distant. Please help! Many thanks.

    Unknown snake Guanacaste Costa Rica

My gardener, who is pretty savvy about all forms of wildlife, showed me this picture on his phone of a snake that he met that he could not identify. Too bad the head is obscured, but maybe the marks along the slithery back are enough to identify? Thanks. I'm a birder, really!

    Sámara, Costa Rica, sparrow ID

Please help to ID this bird, spotted in woods this morning. Could it be a striped sparrow? Sorry for the bad photo. Many thanks!

Treefrog in Nicoya peninsula, Guanacaste Costa Rica

This little frog popped out of a toilet, popped back in, and finally emerged onto dry land two days later. It looks like a meadow treefrog, but is rather larger (owing to time spent in the septic tank?) at 9 cm, and is out of its geographical range. Please confirm or dispute ID. Thanks

    Monteverde, Costa Rica

Please help to ID this beauty (too bad about the fuzzy shot). Thanks

Seal ID, Newcomb Hollow Beach, Cape Cod

I thought that these were grey harbour seals from afar, but up close, I saw that they have flaring nostrils and long boney snouts. They were in the sea about 15 meters from the shore in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Could they be horse head seals? Or what? Thanks

    Please ID Costa Rica

There was a Baltimore Oriole around this morning. Could this be his mate? Or am I WAY off this time? Thanks

    Costa Rica waders

I thought I had some semipalmate plovers, but fear that I'm wrong again! Here's a snap of a group who were breakfasting in a river this morning, one with wings spread. This is probably a very easy one. My partner tells me that I spend far too much time with my birds, so please have a go! Thanks

    Sámara, Costa Rica Western tanager?

Hola, Found this suspect early morning in the woods. Have never seen such a bird here, so suspect it might be a migrant. Was tempted to call it a Western tanager, but the olive side feathers threw me off, as I think they should be black. Please help. Thanks.

    Raptor ID Costa Rica

Found this fellow complaining in the woods this morning. I think that it's a juvenile common black hawk, but others beg to differ. Please ID so that I can get on with my life! Thanks!

    Rufous-capped warbler? Costa Rica

I found a group of these tiny birds, very bold, coming right up to me. They were tweeting away and dancing around on the ground at my feet and in the dry forest branches. (They were a distraction from the most entertaining Mr & Mrs long-tailed manakin show) It looks like a rufous-capped warbler...

Please help to identify this bird, shot by one of our guests in Monteverde Cloud Forest. I promised him we would find the answer very soon, considering the weather conditions in the UK today!

Night heron Pacific coast, Costa Rica

Cleaning up old photos, and came across this shot of what I believe to be a juvenile yellow-crowned night heron. I know that they are breeding in this mangrove swamp, but have never seen one with such a patch of fluff! Not a good shot, but adequate for ID, I should think. Thanks

    Seedeater Guanacaste, Costa Rica

I was so distracted by the roseate spoonbill and great egrets on my riverbank this morning that I hardly noticed this tiny bird. I think that it is a white-collared seedeater, but it seemed larger than the local little variables that are around. Please help--not a great shot, but sufficient, I'm...

Hello, just spent a few days around Boston, and had this singing bird just carrying on. Please ID. I was thinking mockingbird because of her repertoire, but couldn't find a local bird book. Many thanks

    Migrant from insects

Hola, Seems that I have my head in the birds, and don't know a butterfly from a moth (nor either of the above from an insect, where I seem to have erroneously posted my query). If anyone has any insight as to the identity of my garden-eating creatures, I would be most grateful. Here, the stray...

    Caterpillar ID, please, Costa Rica

My garden is being devoured by these critters, and I would like to think that I am sacrificing my plants to what will become an amazing butterfly. It's dazzlingly beautiful. Please don't tell me it will turn into a beige moth! Thanks

I found this bird sitting on a branch in an estuary, but have never seen her before. Is it some sort of plover? Can't find it in my Styles and Skutch. Many thanks. Sara

    Canon A630 emergency!

As I live on the ocean, the salt air wreaks havoc on all electronics. So I just replaced my trusted Canon PowerShot A95, which I loved, and which greeted me one day with the dreaded E18 failure, with a PowerShot A630 (4X optical: the max, as I understand, for digiscoping). I was trying to use it...

    Stranger in Guanacaste, CR

Please help me to identify this bird. She was in our coastal wetland, and have never seen her here before. (She was alone) She looks like a Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus). Is she migrating now? Sorry for the bad photos; it was really bright this morning. Thanks
