    Large Heath

Hello, As I'm going to North-west Wales tomorrow I would like to try for Large Heath either in Wales or Whixall Moss on the way back. Does anyone know if they are out yet and if so where please? Many thanks, Marcus

    Omani Owl

That's correct, where the bird is found the local people call it by this name, differing slightly from region to region.

Undiscovered Owls - The Sound Approach

A superb talk by Magnus last night down here in Dorset. The full list of species wasn't divulged but there have been interesting developments in Iran which perhaps show that Kirwan et al were a bit quick of the mark revealing their "findings". Magnus played several sound recordings and his...

Undiscovered Owls - The Sound Approach

Exciting news that the latest publication from the Sound Approach team is almost with us - Undiscovered Owls. Looks like a bit of a bargain as not only do you get the book, with lots of previously unpublished photos, you also get 4 CD's loaded with western palearctic owl sounds, including the...

    Pugs and micro

Agree with David, the pugs are probably too worn to id but it's defo the Aussie no 656.

    Moth. Swift? Derbyshire.

Exactly Paul, or you could just look at specimens - oh wait, they're no good any more, or you could just trawl the internet for photos but you can't always tell when and where they were taken and even what they are! Alternatively you could cherry pick photos and see what "experts" make of them...

    Argyresthia x2

Hi Rob, Thanks for that, they certainly seem pretty obvious but I just wanted to make sure there aren't any other similar species which I had overlooked. Until the end of 2010 there were 4 records of trifasciata and just 2 of cupressella in Dorset though I would imagine there's been plenty more...

    Macro, Jersey

Thanks for posting this, I have to say it wasn't something that was on my radar but now I know to check every Puss Moth thoroughly. Surely overlooked in this Country? A link to a bit more info as it's not in any of the books I have http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerura_erminea Cheers, Marcus Or...

    Argyresthia x2

Hi All, I'm fairly sure with my id on these two but as there are hardly any records of either from Dorset I'd appreciate other's views. As ever, happy to be proven wrong :t: Photos 1 & 2 I think are trifasciata and 3 & 4 cupressella Many thanks, Marcus

    Bucculatrix maritima

Absolutely Rob - when there's so many other really pretty moths down here why would anybody be silly enough to look for grotty little micros in low species density habitat ;) Can't wait to get out there again and see what else there is!!

    Bucculatrix maritima

Hi, Did a bit of sweep-netting out on Swineham Point in Poole Harbour last night and this was the commonest moth with at least 30 caught. I'm sure it's Bucculatrix maritima but as there's only been 18 individuals ever recorded in Dorset before I'd like a second opinion please. Many thanks Marcus

    Pug, Dorset

Thanks for the input chaps. Been getting a few Oak-tree Pug here but it just looked a little different but I guess that's what it is. I don't think Common Pug would ever show such a large central spot as this individual. Cheers, Marcus

    Pug, Dorset

Hi All, Been going round in circles with this one I caught on the 25th May here in Poole, any help greatly appreciated. Marcus

    Comic Tern, Cornwall, 19th January

I think they were both in ad winter plumage, my note-taking back then wasn't what it should have been and my notebooks are all in storage anyway. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

    Comic Tern, Cornwall, 19th January

Indeed Roy, I thought the same. Having looked at the links for Antarctic Tern the bills have a decurved appearance whilst the Cornish bird looks to have a straight 'un. Has anyone managed to find any photos of Arctic Tern from this time of year?

    Comic Tern, Cornwall, 19th January

Hi Samuel, All I can add is that I have seen both Common and Arctic Tern mid-winter in Kent. Back in the mid-80s I recall two Common Tern wintering on the Thames by Littlebrook power station, nr Dartford, when there used to be an outflow there. I have also seen a 1w Arctic Tern at Dungeness on...
