    Zuiko 300 2.8 question

It's electronic (AKA focus by wire). BTW I've owned one for 12 years so I know quite a bit about this lens.

    Olympus OM-D E-M10?

Although I mainly use either my 300/f4 or my old 4/3rds 300/f2.8 I do have the 75-300 and it's a decent lens at its price point.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Unlikely but not totally impossible around here. But if you look at the transition area between the ginger/brown of the head and grey/white of the lower neck it's a more gradual transition in the Merganser than the Goosander.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

I've often seen a Kestrel sitting on one those piles. Often it's down one side keeping out of the wind. I saw the same behaviour last year which makes me wonder if it's the same bird.

    Thanks for that Geoff :t:

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

OK I give in. I've been going to Middleton on a fairly regular basis for a few years now and until very recently I thought I knew the reserve fairly well but I have absolutely no clue where Hall Lake is. It's not marked on any map of the reserve that I've ever seen. Can some kind soul please put...

My EM-1 Mark II settings for birds.

Yes. IS-1 will always attempt to compensate for movement of the camera. IS-AUTO can detect that you're panning to follow the action and so won't attempt to correct/fight the panning motion. It's documented in the manual. ????????????????

    Olympus E-M1 MarkII: OH MY!

I'd imagine you'd be panning anyway whilst following the bird so that probably answers your question :) The real solution is to use as small an AF group as possible and maybe set the AF Lock a bit tighter. Remember too that there's no "set and forget" setting for AF Lock: you're going to need...

MFT lens 100-400mm, Leica DG, announced

In the photo of the geese you're clearly focusing on the grass in front of the birds rather than the birds themselves.

Olympus lens for birds in low light!

50-200. Gives you f3.5 at 200mm and perfectly usable wide open.

Hmmm. I may possibly have walked past the White-fronted Goose without giving it a second look. This was late morning. Set la vie.

Looks like a female to me but I'm far from an expert.

Ideas on places to visit near Lichfield

Best place is probably RSPB Milddleton Lakes. OK so only half of it is actually in Staffordshire.... Croxall Lakes can be good but I've found it a bit on the quiet side this winter. Nearly is an area known as Whitmore Haye. Good chance of seeing Tree Sparrow and Yellowhammer there and possibly...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

I've yet to see a GWE but I bet you can't get within a country mile of them unless you're in a hide.

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Indeed although it's probably the dog otter that the mink need to worry about more than a female with cubs whose first instincts will be to protect her cubs by moving them away from potential danger. The dog otter's territory will probably be something like 10 miles long so the chances of the...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Much worse than any of the above. I hope the RSPB will trap them out.

Titchwell Hello All, A couple of lady friends of mine are visiting Titchwell for the first time next week. Could anybody tell me what the quality of the paths is like there? Is it a wellies job or would sensible shoes be OK? TIA

Hen Harriers on the Chase tend to be more winter visitors.

I think Wood Pigeons will breed at any time of the year given half a chance.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Easy - from the road. All of the land is private. We used to sneak on there some years ago but personally I wouldn't risk it these days.

    Birding In Staffordshire

The garden has been fairly quite recently apart from a high density of Blackbirds. I've counted as many as six at once in what is quite a small garden. Today though the cold weather brought in a couple of (to me) welcome visitors in the shape of a male Blackcap and a male Siskin. Neither was...
