Last Butterfly of the Year 2023

I was surprised to see a Brimstone yesterday in a sheltered sunny bramble patch only a few yards west of the Stevenage A1.

A few stickies from Southend, Essex ystrdy.

The bird below the skua appears to my eyes to be an auk, most likely a Guillemot. I was going to go with dark Arctic Skua, but the apparent amount of white in the wing has got me thinking that Pom might be a better fit.

    600mm pf ??

There has been speculation that one will appear for the Z mount eventually.

    ATX 115 Data Wanted

Naglers vary a lot with eye relief, though not sure which ones are still available. Could not cope with the original 13mm and 9(?)mm but I have and enjoy the later 12mm design, and used it occasionally when i had the older grey Swarovski. A bit old hat now I guess but I also used a couple of...

    Scottish Dragon and Damselflies

I have seen Azure Hawker late June in the small reserve half way along the north shore of Loch Arkaig. Think its managed for Chequered Skipper which might be flying when you are there.

[Korea, Jeju Island] Taiga vs Tundra Bean Goose

The head shape, reminiscent of a Whooper Swan, suggests Middendorff's (Taiga) Bean Goose to me. Could be wrong though, but I've read up on this form in the unlikely event of one turning up in the UK. I don't think you need consider Tundra.

    Larkspur or delphinium

Tringa sp. , Sofia area, Bulgaria

Greater Yellowlegs. Based on apparent structure and paler bill which I think ought to rule out Lesser.

Ortolan or Cretzschmar's Bunting (Southern Israel - September)

White eye ring should exclude Ortolan. Grey Necked comes to mind, but a bit out of range.

    Flower ID Ireland

Now known as Hesperantha coccinea. Many varieties in the red-white range. Easily divided to produce more.

    Plant IDs x6

No 6 could be a willow. There are people who plant up large pots with several single stemmed willows and weave them together which appears to be the case here.

    Semipalmated or Ringed Plover?

All Semi P for me, bills pretty short and stubby, limited orange on lower mandible and loral pattern are right for semi palmated.

Is this a wildflower or garden escapee?

Unfortunately not everyone is able to smell Sweet Violets-I can't. I have several cultivated varieties, and they also grow wild near me. On rare occasions I do get a brief hint, but they have the property of inhibiting our scent receptors.

    Pearl & Dean Song

Just a thought-you could have a listen to Dunnock song recordings as well. There is some similarity to the rythm of the Pearl and dean ads.

Which internet recording platform for your daily birds?

I've been using ebird for around 5 years now, ever since I stared to use Scythebill to record my sightings and realised it had an export to ebird facility. I've largely stopped using a notebook as well (at least for birds) and use the ebird phone app. I have used iNaturalist as well, mainly for...

Those median coverts suggests Richards Pipit to me, but don't have any references to hand at the moment.

Saturn - Jupiter Conjunction Dec 2020

Rained off for me tonight. Previous two nights were clear, and got some images, but turbulence was a big problem with the low elevation and in particular on Sunday with rapidly moving clouds.

Saturn - Jupiter Conjunction Dec 2020

Last nights imaging was a bit of a rush, with no preparation and time was limited. You will need as solid a tripod as possible, and use of a remote shutter or self timer is necessary because of vibration. As anything above the atmosphere is at infinity, there is no need to stop down to get both...
