Raptor - West of Minneapolis, MN

My brother sent me this photo of a raptor he saw in a marsh area west of Minneapolis. When I saw the photo, I immediately thought and still believe - "Northern Harrier" - but he insists this bird was much larger. Any thoughts?

Another Shorebird - Tualatin NWR, Oregon

Here is another shorebird that seems off for a Western...shorter beak, unusual plumage for a Western. Is it just the time of year or am I actually looking at something more like a Semipalmated Sandpiper here? Thank you!

    Shorebirds - Tualatin NWR, Oregon

I saw these 4 shorebirds from far away - they seemed to be in flight from one grass area to another, not necessarily (but not sure) actually wading along the shore, especially as there was almost no mud at Tualatin NWR today. These birds feel bigger than Western and Least, with slightly longer...

Shorebird at Force Lake, Portland, Oregon

Sorry for the very pixellated photo. I saw this shorebird by itself (there were 200 other peeps moving together as a group) and it seemed larger than the other peeps. This photos shows it adjacent to a Long-billed Dowitcher. Any ideas? I see the yellow legs, but it feels too big to be a Least...

Western Sandpiper? Tumalo Reservoir, Central Oregon

This bird was near a small group of Westerns. But he just seems so much lighter than them. Can you help me confirm this is a Western? Thanks!

    Birding Paros, Greece

Hi all, I will be in Paros for 5 days (unfortunately, I won't be able to visit other islands, like Naxos, which I understand has more bird diversity). Bar-tailed Bird in Suburban Portland, Oregon - Shrike?

I can't make heads or tails of this bird, seen at the very top of a very large tree in Southwest Portland, Is this a Northern Shrike? Maybe its not barred, but shadows from the fir tree make it appear so? Thanks!

Lesser Yellowlegs? Baskett Slough NWR, Oregon

Hi all, I saw this shorebird at Baskett Slough NWR, near Salem, Oregon on July 11. It feels like a juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs to me, but I am not sure. In the binoculars view, it felt like there was a lot of cream-color on its head and neck, and the bill feels thicker than yellowlegs. Any...

    European Bee-eater: Nearby Naples?

Hi all, I'll be in Naples and Procida at the end of April, and hoping to sneak in a little birding. I have always wanted to see a European Bee-eater, and wondering if there is any chance nearby Naples. I suspect I will be too early. Any recommendations? Lago de'Averne? Thank you! Erik

Should Tourists Eat Puffins in Iceland?

When I was preparing for a trip to Iceland that included an itinerary to see the bird cliffs of Latrabjarg, I noticed that many travel bloggers were writing about their experience eating puffins in Reykjavik. This, of course, bothered me, and I wanted to explore the ethics of it. This is a...

    Shorebird, Reykjavik, Iceland

I saw this shorebird among a group of Dunlin on an Atlantic beach near Reykjavik, Iceland. But it doesn't feel like a Dunlin to me. Am I off base?

    Sandpiper at Fernhill Marsh, Oregon

I assume this is a Spotted Sandpiper, but the bill length seems long. Anybody care to confirm that this is indeed a Spotted and not a Solitary? Thank you!

    Shorebird near Portland, Oregon

I saw this shorebird on the Tualatin River, in Tigard, Oregon while kayaking on the river. I saw it three times, and each time failed to get good sightings. Here is what I know: 1. It was larger than a peep, and felt like it had a longer than peep neck. 2. It had long, narrow wings. 3. It was...

    Godwit in Oregon

I was at Sunset Beach near Warrenton, Oregon this weekend and photographed some local shorebirds - Whimbrels, Marbled Godwits and Long-billed Curlews were all present. Now, I've heard that there are reports of Bar-tailed Godwits in this same area. While most of my photos appear to be Marbled...

Hi, this bird was a tough one for me, being a West Coast US birder visiting Spain. I photographed this in a field in Aigumolls, Catalonia, Spain. It was a field filled with cows and cattle egret, and was nearby wet fields. Fieldfare...warbler? Thanks for the help!

    Dunlin at Fernhill Wetlands, Oregon

Hi all, Is this a juvenile Dunlin? The id books tend to match it up to a Dunlin, but I just felt like this bird seemed much larger than the dunlins, westerns and leasts in the area.

Lesser Nighthawk or Common Nighthawk, Baker City CA

A friend posted this on social media, not knowing what it was. It looks like a Common Nighthawk to me, but the photo is from Baker City, where Lesser Nighthawks are more common, I believe. Can anybody help me with any fieldmarks that could call this one way or the other? Thanks!

    Mt Hood, Oregon Bird

Hi all, I was in the Elk Meadows area of Mount Hood, which is a fairly pristine meadows area. I sat down to look at a variety of mixed warblers - Orange-crowned, Townsend's and McGillivrays or Nashville Warblers, and among them was this larger bird. I cannot figure it out - juvenile...
