    Please help UK bird watcher

The rookery at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm is getting a lot of action. Lots of Great Egrets already nesting and the smaller waders won't be far behind them. The Alligator Farm allows you to get closer to wild birds in large numbers than any other place I know of.
  3. Red-eared Sliders, Trachemys s. elegant

    Red-eared Sliders, Trachemys s. elegant

The fresh water turtles don't come out of the water much during the colder months, even in much of Florida. In late March you start to see them sunning on pond banks and logs.
  4. Mallard, Anas Platyrhynchos.immature

    Mallard, Anas Platyrhynchos.immature

Ducklings. These may be hybrids, interbreeding with Mottled Ducks is common here. Well meaning people feeding wild Mallards tempt them to remain in this area when the non migratory Mottled Ducks are breeding.

    HUNKERING DOWN

There was a Northeaster blowing, it was damp and cold. The wind pushed the tide in exceptionally high and the wading birds were sheltering in freshwater ponds just inland from the coast. There is a Tricolor Heron on the left, a Snowy Egret, Woodstorks, White Ibis and Roseate Spoonbills in this...
  9. Florida Pond

    Florida Pond

An immature Little Blue Heron shares a small Cypress tree with two Snowy Egrets.
  10. Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga

    Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga

This bird was literally stuffed, the little tidal lake was full of fish and the Anhinga was doing it's best to catch them all. Anhingas don't have oil glands, they must dry out periodically, but I suspect this one was grounded by a full belly.

    Roseate Spoonbill in South Carolina

Mark the Roseate Spoonbills are breeding at least as far North as St. Augustine, Florida. They are common here now after decades when they were rare. Savannah is only 180 miles North of here, with similar habitat, so hopefully you Georgia folks will see even more.
  13. FOSSIL SHARK TEETH

    FOSSIL SHARK TEETH

Sharks shed and replace teeth constantly. They lack bony skeletons so the teeth remain long after the shark is gone. I've been told that the darker ones are older. Part of the local beach has heavy deposits of Coquina shells and the teeth concentrate in these deposits. Several shark species...

  19. Roseate Spoonbill, Platalea ajaja

    Roseate Spoonbill, Platalea ajaja

Roseate Spoonbills are filter feeders, straining small crustaceans from the mud with their adapted beak. As with Flamingos their color is related to diet. On a poor diet the color is less intense. This one was foraging for Red Cedar foliage to be used for nest lining material. Spoonbills were...

  24. Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Nyctanassa violacea

    Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Nyctanassa violacea

With a just caught blue crab for lunch. I've seen them catch small fish but they really seem to prefer small crusraceans.

Thanks, I've become attached to the Ibis, they aren't spectacular and flashy but they are good natured and interesting to follow around. Hopefully they feel the same way about me, LOL
