Unusual (?) parasitic behaviour Kestrel v Barn Owl

Hi Jane, I recall seeing a similar turn of events whilst watching a Barn Owl hunting in Suffolk a few years ago. The Kestrel appeared almost as soon as the owl did, as if it was waiting for it. It did not take the owl long to catch something - at which point the Kestrel noisily chased it...

    Sibe Chiffchaff?

I think there are now 2 or 3 Sibe Chiffchaffs there and the bird in the photo looks like one of them. Not technically classed as full species yet, but many folk count them as one.

    Galapagos information wanted

Its different for everyone I suppose. I don't seem to suffer from this, so I didn't need to take any meds (but did have some with me). Though I recall one long journey, I think to Genovasa, being fairly rough and several others onboard were suffering badly. So you would definately need to...

    Galapagos information wanted

One of the best ways to see all endemics is by joining a cruise run by bird tour companies. This one targets seeing all endemics http://www.tropicalbirding.com/central-south-america-birding/galapagos/galapagos-endemics-cruise/ and has a very good track record of getting them all, including the...

Fairly quiet at Ramore Head over the weekend. Very few Manx. The odd Bonxie and Storm Petrel moving through. Decent looking weather system forecast from early Saturday may liven things up a bit.

    Roseate Tern?

I would not waste your time trying for these at Larne Lough. Down to 1 breeding pair in recent years and only very distant views of breeding island available. I'm from Larne and I am yet to see this species around the Lough! Would also think you are highly unlikely to see them in Belfast...

    Unkempt, Fuerteventura

Saw several tatty female Chats on the island a few springs ago. One out of its normal habitat on a golf course threw me for a while. They are fairly non-discript and can recall warblers (like GW) or even flycathers. From what I can make out in the two photos provided, the hint of a wing-bar...

A symbiotic relationship between sunfish and albatrosses

Hi David, Fascinating indeed. It reminds me of an observation a number of us saw during a seawatch at the Bridges of Ross, Co.Clare on 24 Aug 09. A Sabine's Gull was observed appearing to feed on top of a Sunfish, which had flipped onto its side. As you say though, there is a great...

    Canada wood duck

A Wood Duck would indeed be a rarity in NI. Many records of this species here are believed to be escapes from wildfowl collections. As you mention the bird was not alarmed at seeing you only 3m away, this would suggest this may be the case here. However, given the location and time of year, I...
