    Dubai Airport

I'll be going on a huge overseas trip in July (omigosh so many new birds for me to see in Europe and the US). I have field guides for those areas, but I will be passing through Dubai. I probably won't be leaving Terminal 3, but if I look out the window and see a bird - what am I likely to be...

    Lifelist management on Birdforum

I don't know, it's probably been mentioned dozens of times before. Birdforum is a great one-stop resource for bird info, but it's missing one thing. The ability to manage your lifelist here would be awesome. Facebook did have a great app for lifelisting, but it seems to have not caught up...

    Birdling Lessons by Gemfyre

I just started today on my LiveJournal what I hope to be a series of lessons on identifying birds in South-West Australia (with a few forays into the Broome area). Today's lesson was on the three common Gallinules found in the south-west. Check it out! All posts in this series will be tagged...

What is that little grey bird?

I often do a pass by Herdsman Lake on the way to work. Yesterday while driving along Lakeside drive I spotted a small grey bird in the grass among the Purple Swamphens. Lucky it's a quiet road because I quickly braked and though to myself, "That was too big to be a dove. And it didn't look...

    Swan Goose hybrid?

Is it possible for geese and swans to hybridise? Particularly Black Swan Cygnus artratus and Domestic Goose Anser anser? A particular swan at Herdsman Lake is always hanging around with a feral goose. As I was driving back to work this afternoon I noticed the goose with a swan (not sure if it...

    Duck Day Part 2

I went back to Herdsman Lake after work (to the south-west corner) and added a few more birds to the list. Silver Gull Cattle Egret (a rarity in Perth, but there has been one hanging around a paddock next to the lake). Black-winged Stilt Little Black Cormorant Pelican Rufous Whistler Western...

For a workday, that was damn fine birding!

    A Ten Duck Day

Although my current job isn't perfect (I'm working as a secretary for a solicitor, when I have a degree in Conservation Biology), the location is brilliant. Herdsman Lake is a 3 minute drive away so I often go there for lunch. Today is the first really warm day we've had in ages. And in the...

    A Dollarbird... in PERTH!?

A few days ago there was a post on the Birding-Aus mailing list mentioning that a Dollarbird had been seen at a lake in Perth. Now Dollarbird are birds that spend the Summer in the northern and eastern parts of Australia. So initially I scoffed at the report assuming it must be a...

    Location : Perth area

Currently working on getting this up to date and filled out. I noticed someone else had copy/pasted my old post about the area into the article, have removed most of that info, I know considerably more about the birds and places nowadays.

    Plover or Sandpiper

Currently having an argument with someone elsewhere online as to what these are. The photographer insists they are a plover but I think those beaks are way to long to be plover beaks. It's an an American beach and I'm only familiar with Aussie waders. Anyone want to ID these fellas?

    Finally, a Rainbow Bee-eater

The first Rainbow Bee-eaters were spotted around Perth back in late August. Last week I finally heard some at Wireless Hill, but didn't see any. Yesterday I finally saw a few at Carine Lakes. One appeared directly in front of us and an astute member of the group realised this bird had dug...

    Heavy duty tripod

Can anyone recommend me a decent heavy duty tripod? One that will withstand wind and also be good for astronomical viewing. I just put my scope on my lightweight tripod and got a heap of shake trying to look at the planets.

    Ooh, the forum is prettyfied!

Been a few months since I last logged on. I like the new look! I must have a play around and make sure I can navigate it fine but I can't see me having any troubles. Does anyone know the website of that set of books that covers all the birds in the world?

    Birding spots around Melbourne

I'll be heading to Melbourne in July for a week and hope to get in a bit of birding while I'm there. I've already got a trip to Werribee Treatment Plant set up, but what I want to know is where are some good spots near Melbourne that are accessible by public transport? Day trips/tours could...

    Teach me about tripods

Of course like everyone I was wanting a Leica or Swarovski, but they are simply too expensive and I would like a scope in the near future (Hooded Plover count is in mid-Feb, a scope would be really useful for it). So I decided I may as well go for the Japanese optics again. I ended up getting...

    Scope/tripod compatibility

Can anyone tell me if this scope - http://www.binoculars.com/products/nikon-20-60x80-spotting-scope-angled-body-with-eyepiece-227.html and this tripod - http://www.binoculars.com/products/optavian-field-tripod-26036.html will get along? I did e-mail binoculars.com but I really want to make...

In the market for a scope setup

(I did post this on the tripod forum as there is no forum for scopes in general, just ones for specific brands. I got no reply there.) Seeing as I now have a decent paying job I'm hoping to finally get a scope a little after Christmas (in time for an April trip to Broome to watch the waders...

    Molloch horridus

Better known as the Thorny Devil. The typical image of these is a yellow and tan, desert dwelling lizard. I was quite surprised to discover they were also found in woodland in Australia's south-west and even more surprised to find one a few days later! The woodland lizards take on a more...
