Which Bird do you Least Like?

Do you mean birds or old folks? My least favorites are the ones that all look alike or that for some other reason I can't identify like females out on their own, sandpipers, etc.

    Southern Florida 14th-19th Nov

Normally, this time of year you'd have trouble getting a room without a reservation but with the poor economy you may be okay. It's been about 18 years since I drove the Tamiami Trail but it's mostly through the Glades so there won't be a lot of motels but probably lots of chances to see...

What am I seeing on this Great Blue Heron's wing?

Thanks everyone. I noticed the same thing on this GBH. It really looked like some feathers were missing, maybe the red shows more when it's molting.

Caged wild birds in Phnom Penh

Releasing birds is done in the US too. I attended a funeral that was delayed because the man with the doves was caught in traffic. Not Asian immigrants, long-time southern Baptists.

It Pooped! ...Making a *%#@ List.

There's a book called "What Bird Did That?" for identifying the evidence on your windshield. It sits on my bookshelf next to "Flattened Fauna" the book for identifying roadkill.

    Birdwatching "not environmentally friendly"

And if all that money I spend on coffee went to the Columbian farmers they might be happy growing a legal drug instead of an illegal one. Seriously though, There was a feature on 60 Minutes last night about efforts to save the Mara River in Kenya and Tanzania. The river is drying up because of...

Lady birders -do you worry about safety etc

Paul, are you saying we're not restrained and calm enough to be allowed to have guns? You betcha! [Disclaimer: this is not an expression I would normally use but it seemed appropriate here] I used to feel safe in the wilderness and semi-wilderness but the crazies now seem to be as plentiful...

    10 buzzards together!?

Yesterday I startled a flock of black vultures in the woods. With a great deal of scrambling and flapping they flew up into the trees. All but one managed to land on limbs but the one was left clinging to the side of a tree like a giant nuthatch. The others soon flew away but this one just...

    2 days in Central Florida

Late October should be a very good time. It's starting to get cool up north so the snowbirds (human and avian) are starting to return. I agree that Merritt Island is excellent, you hardly have to get out of the car. That area also has Canaveral National Seashore which is very good. If...

    Birdwatching "not environmentally friendly"

I'm not going to feel guilty about driving my small hybrid for my favorite recreation activity when I see the huge number of people who drive their RVs and SUVs to visit Disney World.

Foreigner needs help with the language

Alas, I guess I'm too much of a pessimist to be a twitcher, I always assume the bird will be gone by the time I get there. Or maybe I'm just lazy. Thanks.

    Brazos Bend State Park

Alligators are one reason I like birding from a boardwalk, the gators don't climb too well and if they do get on the boardwalk, there's always a railing to stand on! They don't generally attack but t's a good idea to remember they are wild OMNIVORES.
