The whiskey jacks around here are usually up in the Spruce forest, whereas down here in the valleys it's pine and fir and some cedar.     Nyjer Thistle Feeder

    How 'bout a cardboard tube of some sort with holes punched in it? I would think you could also find some sort of clear plastic tube somewhere or pvc or something of that sort. I'm the opposite. I have two feeders but can't afford the nyer seeds.

    Until today, it's been nothing but downy wood peckers, chickadees and red breasted nuthatches since everybody went South a month ago, but today had a female american goldfinch. No big deal, but nice to see a new face every now and then.

    Best binoculars for the "mature" observer

    I turned 60 this year, but I don't know how mature I am. Still a little kid in many ways and proud of it. Anyhow this year I bought a used pair of Zeiss 7x42 Dialyt BGAtp. Wish I had had them since they were new, I am thoroughly smitten with them and shall never need another pair of bins.

    Had a brief visit today from a lesser goldfinch, my first. He was a good bit north of his supposed northern limit. Also a good herd of black capped chickadees and a couple of red breasted nuthatches who seem always to travel with this group. First time they've been by in a couple of weeks.
