ID for juvenile warbler in Oman

Apologies for the most awful of pictures, but all I had to hand was my phone! These were taken this week in Misfah, Oman in a green and verdant wadi. The (i presume) warbler looked young, with a very yellow chest and up to the face and then there's that bill. Wood Warbler? Again, apologies...

    Pipit Species Camargue

Hi, no pic I'm afraid, but anyone have any insight to pipits in the Camargue (seen today)? Could have been the light, but the belly, which was very streaky, had almost an orange buff to it. Dark supercillum too. Not Tawny, or, I'm sure Meadow. Rock or Water perhaps, but that orange/buff tint...

Gull ID - Herring or Caspian

Hi, could anyone please give me a bit of help on this 1/2 winter gull on the Thames this week. I think it's probably Herring, but I thought the bill a bit long and the bird pale(ish) which made me wonder if a small chance of Caspian! Grateful for any help and pic is of course only from a phone...

    Paxos sightings and shearwater question

Anyone know what shearwater sp would be around the Corfu coast in June? Yelkouan or Scopoli? Bumpy hydrofoil wasnt the best for birdwatching... Otherwise, Paxos in June: Common, Alpine, Pallid(?) swift Barn, Red rumped swallow House martin Goldfinch Greenfinch House sparrow Great tit Hooded...

    Albino/hybrid/white gull, Surrey

hi, anyone got any idea what this gull might be. I think it's an odd Black Headed, just no colour on the wing. The pictures don't show it, but it's brilliant white in colour.

    Cyprus IDs

Hi, can anyone please give me some advice on the attached. I think the shrike is a young, female, red-backed. The two (at very long range!) warblers - Willow? Wagtail - white? And not sure about the other warbler. All taken in North Cyprus over the past week.

    Auvergne in June

I spent a great week in the Auvergne earlier this month, staying in a hamlet called Chazieux on the Allier. It's south of Brioude. It was a family holiday, so mostly walking and keeping eyes open, but, I saw the following. It's a bit of a data dump and there's some obvious stuff on there, but...

    Redpoll variety

Mealy or Lesser? I know it's the only one in shot, just looked a little larger and paler than the others. Taken in Surrey today. Pic's a little bright, sorry. Anyone else had an influx of Redpoll? Relatively unknown in my garden yet over the past couple of weeks I've had from 2-6, feeding...

    Gull ID

Yet another gull ID query Taken in Surrey this morning. The light's awful and it was at some distance so I can only apologise for the quality, but, like many, I do struggle with gull ID, especially with the younger birds. I feel it's a Herring first winter but if someone can tell me why and...

    Island Barn Reservoir

Hi all, what's the deal with getting access to here? I wouldn't mind going to see the Velvet Scoters but some of the sites I've seen say that it's restricted access. Is this the case or, like at Staines, does it have access for people walking past?

    Mozambique help!

Hi all, since there isn't a dedicated Mozambique page on here, I wonder if I might tap into your knowledge! I've just come back from an amazing week in Benguerra, in the Bazaruto Archipelago and before that, a week on safari (Nthambo in Klaserie and Arathusa in Sabi Sands) which was great too...

    Birding books

Hi, I've just booked up my first ever trip to South Africa (Kruger) - and then Mozambique for this September/October. We'll be safari-ing, walking and beaching, but of course I'll be birding. As this is a completely new part of the world for me, could anyone recommend a good field guide for me...

After reading about the Shore Lark seen there, I'd love to pay a visit. But do you need a permit to get in?

    'Squeaky' bird

I was in Northern Cyprus earlier this week, up in the mountains in a pine forest, near some ruins and I heard an odd call and I wondered if anyone might be able to help.... There were a series of single squeaks, several in a row, each with a pause in between, followed by some chatter, then...

    Claygate

Anyone live in or around there? I've been there a couple of years and I've got a (fairly informal) list which hit 51 recently. Just curious as whether anyone else has ever regularly birded in or around the forests and fields of Claygate and turned up anything interesting.

    Wheatear in Feb?

Out walking today and I saw what I took to be a female Wheatear but is it too early in the year for them. Or do any over winter? Sighting was in Claygaye, Surrey. Farmland and the bird was perched on top of hedgerow before flying off into the fields. Didn't hear anything and only saw it for a...

    Surrey/South West London birding

Ok then, I've got tomorrow (22 October) off on leave. I live in Surrey, near Esher, and I fancy going out birding tomorrow. One of my favourite sites is driving around the M25 to Rainham, but anyone get any other ideas for a place to visit? I don't really want to drive more than an hour, but...

    North Cyprus

Anyone have much experience of birding there? I've been going for a few years, since I have family there, and have made half hearted, but enjoyable efforts to see all sorts from Cyprus Warblers on the Korineum Golf Course to Audouin's Gulls up in the panhandle. I have Steve Cale's book but...

    Tree/Meadow Pipit?

I'm afraid I don't have a picture but I was wondering whether someone wiser than me might have an idea about difference. Couple of days ago near Chagmore, Dartmoor, I saw a pipit alight on a tree on farmland. There was a forest one side, farmland the other. I thought it was probably a Meadow...

    Black headed gulls

As I was crossing the Thames this morning, I noticed that in the wheeling flocks of Black Headed Gulls, some had already developed their dark hood whereas others still only had the small dot, and some were half way in between. Is this a bit early to be turning dark, or is it normal for...

    Vauxhall Bridge

Anyone pass that way? I cross the bridge most days and like to keep my eyes open for what I see below (or sometimes overhead), particularly when the Thames is out. I've seen: BH Gull LBB Gull GBB Gull Herr Gull G Heron Cormorant Mallard Moorhen Mute Swan Coot Grey Wagtail Carrion Crows Feral...

    Pagham

I'm planning on spending a day down at Pagham next month, in the week between Christmas and New Years. Anyone got any tips of where, in particular, to go/look out for? And, what about tide times, I've looked at a couple of sites which say you can pick leaflets up from the area, but...

    An unusual visitor

I had been wondering why, at times, the food at one of my feeders seemed to be going so quickly and then, last weekend, this little fella came down the tree to have some dinner. It was very tame.
