To drill or not to drill...

...that is the question. I've made a small bracket which screws into the socket on the tripod ring of my Sigma 180 macro. The bracket allows me to attach the camera to either of the two straps I use and to attach a monopod to the bracket at the correct position as regards balance. The whole...

    Grasshopper/Cricket beastie

Came across this wee beast yesterday, if anyone can help with an ID I'd be grateful, pics are not the best but it was an awkward little b***** to get at.

    Stripey thing

An ID would be welcome for this stripey critter, photographed today in a New Forest enclosure.

    UK spider for ID

Came across this one in my garden whilst looking for dragons - the nearest I can get to an ID is a False Widow but I'm really not sure.

    Raptor ID, Hants. UK

I was out looking for an Osprey today when this thing flip flapped into view, it was immediately mobbed by two Common Buzzards for a couple of minutes before gaining height and wandering off. My first thought was Osprey, (it was after all what I was looking for and expecting) but after first...

    Cream-spot Tiger?

I think this is Cream-spot Tiger, but the markings are a little different to any pics I've found on the net.

    New 40D owner.......

..........may need to ask more questions later.|:$| I have today acquired from Ebay a bargain 40D; (under £300 and under 4000 on the shutter), checking it out I thought I'd found a problem in that I couldn't select the AF point, however after a tense hour probing the manual and mostly...

    Multi-map

If you use Multi-Map it can't have escaped your attention that it's been taken over by Bing maps (aka Microsoft), I don't really care who owns or runs it as long as it's usable. Unfortunately this is no longer the case, despite their FAQs saying that it is capable of searching by grid...

    A quickie on the 65mm

Would someone kindly take a look at their Zeiss 65mm and tell me what size cap I need for the objective lens (I think it's written on the inside of the cap). I've lost mine somewhere and can't remember if it's actually a a 65mm cap, I've got the figure 62mm in my mind for some reason. Thanks.

    Optics illusion?

I feel sure this must have been noted before, (but not by me). |:$| I was out last night looking for Nightjars, the full moon rose over the horizon of trees shortly before sunset and was looking particularly fine. The trees were about 2-300 yards away and the adjustment on my binocular focus...

    Help me choose a lens

I'm currently using a Sigma 135-400 and saving my pennies for a Canon100-400 for birding, but have recently developed a pressing need for something with a much closer focus for Dragons and Damsels. My problem is I really can't decide what to buy and after too much time spent looking around the...

    Common darter?

Is this a fairly recently emerged female Common Darter ?

    Blackbird - no tail.

Around about last September a regular female Blackbird in my garden had only the two outer tail feathers, one on each side. I assumed that there had either been a cat problem or it was moulting and would regrow the other feathers. This bird is still around on a regular basis and now has no...

    Warbler? Hants UK (Coastal)

Not sure what this is, can't see anything obvious in my guides, I'm sure some fine person here will know. Seen at Keyhaven this morning, no song heard, bird was low in scrubby trees and going down to the ground regularly. (I have just one more pic, the same pose, but with the bird facing...

    Not seen these before

Any idea what these are, they were fairly mobile and only travelling across the snake (I think), rather than living there.

    Hants. UK - Pipit

Is this just a Rock pipit, or is it littoralis? Pics taken today.

    Diary programme

I'm looking for a freebie diary download. I currently use Mozilla Sunbird and whilst I like the layout I would prefer to be able to enter brief info directly to the space allocated for the day rather than via a window. Just a daily diary, not for birding. Anyone know of such a beast?

    ID for blue butterfly please.

I thought this was a Common Blue but looking at some other pics on the net I'm not so sure now. Picture taken near Keyhaven on the South coast (U.K.) yesterday. Your help would be appreciated.

    Red-Veined Darter?

I've read the book and studied various pics until my veins feel redder than this Dragon's, but I still can't decide whether or not it's a Red-veined Darter.

    Common Darter .....and what else?

I think the first pic is Common Darter rather than RV Darter but confirmation would be nice. If anyone is daft enough to attempt an ID from the second pic any suggestions would be gratefully received, this dragon just never stopped once in about an hour that I was around, I did pick out two...

    Sometimes, you just can't help.

    >> Can you help? me: I will if I can. >> What are those two ducks over there? me: What the two beyond that Canada goose? >> yes. me: they are juvenile Shelduck. >> OK. Thanks anyway, I know Shelduck and they are the wrong colour. me: That's cos they're juveniles. >> exits stage right...

    Keeled Skimmer, eye colour?

Looking through some of my recent pics I noticed a Dragon with a different eye colour to others of the same species. Assuming I've got the ID correct is this an age thing or what? Keeled skimmer with grey eyes, all my other pics show brown eyes.

    Damselfly for ID please.

I expect this is Blue-tailed, but was wondering about the orange (to my eyes) colouring. Might it be Scarce blue-tailed? Thanks.

    Some Dragonflies for ID please.

I think the first and last pics are Keeled Skimmer, but I don't have a clue on the other two despite searching for ages. Taken this morning in the New Forest if it helps.
